Measurement of the level of industrial effluents and rainwater

In recent years, increased costs for groundwater extraction and use, as well as water purification, have led to attempts to improve the efficiency of utilizing lightly contaminated water, in particular domestic wastewater and rainwater. This has created a demand for measuring instruments specifically designed for these media.

For many applications, water does not necessarily have to be absolutely clean or even purified to drinking water standards. Lightly contaminated water, such as domestic wastewater (from showering, hand washing, etc.) or rainwater, is available for free and has therefore been used increasingly recently. Such water accumulates in tanks (where level monitoring is required to control pump operation) and after mild disinfection by ultraviolet treatment or filters can be used, for example, in toilet cisterns or for irrigation.

Currently, when designing houses, increasing attention is paid to creating systems that improve the efficiency of collecting and storing rainwater on adjacent premises. Most often, the rainwater collection system is combined with the domestic wastewater system and the irrigation system.

Level monitoring in tanks containing domestic wastewater and rainwater allows the control system to automatically switch to using fresh water in case of absence of purified wastewater until there is enough wastewater available for use again.

Since hydrostatic level measurement is the most reliable and simple method of measurement, submersible level sensors and pressure transmitters have found wide application in these systems.

Creators of sewage systems are currently actively trying to separate wastewater from rainwater, as heavy precipitation can cause sewage system overflow. A few years ago, the priority task in level measurement was to create a system that records how often and where such overflows occur. However, now the goal of developments is to completely prevent such incidents by preventing rainwater from entering sewage systems.

If rainwater is collected, for example, from highways and roads, it is necessary to analyze its quality, as such water may contain pollutants, such as motor oil or road salt. Usually, such analysis is conducted in tanks, combined with level monitoring.

Drinking water is a valuable resource, and the cost of its extraction and purification is continuously rising, so this resource should not be wasted thoughtlessly. In many cases, it is economically more advantageous to collect rainwater or reuse lightly contaminated domestic wastewater. In these cases, reliable level monitoring ensures the efficient use of these resources.
