Pressure sensors for perfect coffee

KELLER sensors for coffee machines

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in Europe, so it is no surprise that a large number of coffee machines can be seen in residential homes and workspaces. Coffee from automatic coffee machines is the most popular.

Automatic coffee machines are devices that prepare coffee drinks independently, starting from grinding the beans and ending with serving the portion of the drink into a cup. Fully automatic coffee machines usually consist of a grinder, boiler, pump, and brewing unit. In addition to making coffee, some coffee machines are equipped with additional mechanisms – cappuccinators that use steam to heat and froth milk.

The task of the grinder is to produce freshly ground coffee powder from whole beans. Then, using a movable piston, the ground coffee is delivered to the brewing chamber – the key element of the coffee machine. The boiler serves to heat the water, which is then used to prepare the drink.

The pump is connected to the boiler and supplies hot water to the brewing unit, where it combines with the ground coffee. Thanks to pre-wetting with a small amount of water at low pressure, the coffee granules better reveal their taste and aroma. Then, the selected amount of hot water is supplied to the coffee grounds at high pressure, after which the finished drink is poured into the cup. The light creamy foam on the surface of the coffee is formed as a result of the release of essential oils during its preparation.

The influence of pressure on the coffee brewing process

KELLER sensors in coffee machines

Pressure is necessary for brewing aromatic coffee. Most automatic coffee machines have a certain pressure level in the brewing unit. A crucial stage is the supply of hot water under high pressure to the brewing chamber using a built-in pump. Because pressure decreases during this process, pressure sensors are required. In addition to measuring the steam pressure value, the sensors regulate the water temperature. Another task of the sensors is to prevent pressure from exceeding the system limits: in such cases, a valve switches to release steam.

The Swiss company Rex-Royal AG manufactures automatic coffee machines, regularly developing new products and improving technologies. In the Rex-Royal S300 coffee machine series, pressure sensors of the 21C series from KELLER AG were installed. Along with pressure measurement, the sensors measure and control the temperature of milk heated for latte macchiato and cappuccino. Professional Rex-Royal coffee machines ensure the preparation of perfect coffee.
