
The impact of air quality on human productivity and health.
Existing scientific data indicate that modern technologies and procedures can improve indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in such a way that it significantly increases worker productivity, improves their well-being and health. Of course, estimates of profit growth due to increased productivity and improved energy efficiency are very rough, but the fact that they are substantial is undeniable. For example, in the USA, the estimated annual potential savings from reducing respiratory diseases range from $6 to $14 billion. From reducing allergic diseases and asthma, $2 - $4 billion, and the increase in profit from direct improvement in employee productivity ranges from $20 to $160 billion. These calculations can serve as an excellent incentive to consider improving the microclimate of workplaces, which will additionally lead to increased energy efficiency.
Indoor air quality is ensured according to current regulatory and technical documents. In the Russian Federation, GOST R EN 13779—2007 (Ventilation in non-residential buildings. Technical requirements for ventilation and air conditioning systems) and GOST 30494-2011 (Residential and public buildings. Microclimate parameters in premises) are in effect. One way to improve these indicators is to install air quality control sensors. With their help, it is possible either to visually monitor the levels of CO2, temperature, and humidity, or to automate this process, which will allow more economical use of electricity for the operation of ventilation systems, air recirculation, and heating systems in the room.

The level of carbon dioxide concentration has a huge impact on human health. Its concentration causes increasingly noticeable negative effects as it rises.
Starting from states of overexcitement and anxiety, decreased performance, inflammation of the eye mucous membranes, headaches, dry cough (known as the "Sick Building Syndrome" (SBS)), to serious health deviations and complete loss of working capacity. Prolonged exposure to high CO2 concentrations causes negative changes in the human body at the cellular level. This is especially dangerous in preschool institutions, schools, and medical facilities.
It is also long known that the level of CO2 concentration is directly related to the feeling of stuffiness in a room. The higher the concentration, the harder it is to breathe and the stronger the feeling of stuffiness. Accordingly, even if the room has normal humidity and temperature, but the comfortable concentration of carbon dioxide is exceeded, a person will want to turn up the air conditioner rather than ventilate the room. The most effective way to maintain optimal air quality is a properly designed and installed ventilation system that will provide the necessary air exchange in the room.
